Overview

Owners description:

This vessel is a pleasure to sail.
She is a superb example of Dick Newick's matchless ability to combine speed, beauty, strength and simplicity. Exceptionally well built with WESTsystem composites, this 'Tricia' design has been upgraded to include many of the details later introduced in Newick's larger 'Native' trimarans, notably an extended run on the amas, and raised cockpit coambings that continue into swept afterdeck bulwarks. The interior is spartan, which is typical for these designs. Two wide berths are positioned, port and starboard in the midsection, and a single berth is located in the forpeak which also holds the galley space. The cockpit area is deep and capacious with comfortable seating for eight adults while not underway.
Easily single-handed, she offers exceptional speed and acceleration. Upkeep is very straight forward with all systems visible and in immediate reach.
This is a unique chance to own a classic Newick design that still performs with the best of today's multihulls in the same size range.
Quite simply, she's a work of art.

Descriptions

Construction:

WINGS was built by a professional pilot with strong fabrication skills and composite knowledge. Original plans are available.

Framing, stringers, sheer clamp and carlins are douglas fir. The keelson is comprised of a rockered plank of 1 ¼" douglas fir, running nearly the full length of the bottom. Hull and deck surfaces are sheathed with 5/16" marine ply. All surfaces, inside and out, are epoxy coated during construction. Exterior surfaces are a lay-up of epoxy and E-glass, with 1-2 layers of glass on decking and topsides, and 4-6 layers of glass reinforcements along lines of intersection and loading.

This design features developable surfaces yielding complex curvatures, which result in remarkable stiffness and strength: the vessel has no tendency to bend or flex, either underway or during hauling and launching. The original construction has stood up very well, with no stress cracking or failure in the integrity of the glass skins.

Carbon fiber Farrier-style rudder and cassette with NACA-optimized sections, designed and built by performance specialists Phil's Foils in Ottawa Canada (2015).

All appendages (daggerboard, rudder and engines) can be fully retracted to allow entry into very shallow water and/or grounding on soft bottoms. Displacement approximately 3 tons.

Engines:

Twin Yamaha 9.9 hp engines with Hi-thrust options including extra-long shafts, lower gearing and larger props for effortless motoring. 10 knots can be achieved in flatwater without straining the engines.

Engine handling is centralized around two individual single-morse controls. Electric start, electric choke and electric tilt are included. For optimal sailing performance and clearance, both engines are easily hoisted on parallel arms prior to tilting.

Sails and rigging:

Masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars.

Vectran standing rigging, fully UV protected with industrial-grade shrink tubing. Colligo deadeyes and lanyards (2016).

Sails: Mainsail (excellent), Working jib (good), Genoa jib (good), Storm jib (excellent).

Lewmar winches; Harken blocks.; Furlex rollerfurling

Equipment:

ABS-standard electrical system fully replaced (2018). Solid-state panel. LED lighting throughout. Twin 12-volt batteries (group 27).

Garmin 640 GPS, Icom VHF, Ritchie compass (2017). Raymarine depthsounder (2018) and speedometer.

35 lb Mantis achor on bowroller, plus 20 lb Bruce anchor.

Cookmate two-burner alcohol stove.

Dometic portable marine toilet.
